2015 Windsor Gaming Resource Holiday Boardgame Bash - Friday December 11th

Join us at the Green Bean Windsor Star News Cafe at 5pm on Friday December 11th for our thrid annual Holiday Boardgame Bash!

What better way to celebrate the holidays than by playing some games with friends? This is a free, all ages, open gaming event. It's an excuse to get together one more time before all the holiday craziness starts. It's a chance to try out some new games and find stuff to add to your wish list. It's a great chance to discover the perfect gift for the gamer that has everything.

Hidden Gaming Gift Exchange

Bring a gaming related gift to join in the Gaming Gift Exchange. This is completely optional but it's a lot of fun so I recommend everyone take part.

Here's how it's going to work:

Everyone who wants to participate brings a wrapped gaming related gift. These will all be put out on display at the Cafe. The exchange will take place at around 8pm (we'll let people in the middle of games finish up if possible). At that time everyone will receive a random playing card. Then we will draw one card and the first person will pick one of the gifts and open it. Going forward every subsequent person will have an option: open a new gift or "steal" one of the gifts already opened. If your gift is stolen you then get the same choice, open a new gift or "steal" one that's already opened (but no stealing back what was just taken from you). Finally, the player who goes first is at a disadvantage as they have no steal option at the start. To offset that. If no one ever steals from the start player, at the end of the game they can swap their gift with any other person.

Brimstone Board Game Night - December 5th - Featuring Kittens in a Blender

It's time for Brimstone Board Game Night!

Brimstone Board Game Night hits on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of every month. These events run from 5pm to 10pm and are open to all ages.

Every event will feature at least one game. There will be demo copies of the game available and someone on hand willing to teach the game so you can try before you buy.

You can win games just by coming out to play. At every Brimstone Board Game Night you can earn tickets that give you a chance to win free games. Every event we will be giving away a copy of the featured game (see below) and some events we will be giving away even more.

Players earn 1 ticket for playing games, 1 ticket for purchasing a snack or drink, and 1 ticket for bringing 1 or more board games for people to play. Earn 5 more tickets for each game you purchase. First time players will receive 5 additional tickets.

You can find Brimstone at 3298 Walker Rd. Parking is available on the south side of the building and on the city streets around back.

Featured game: Kittens in a Blender

You are twisted. I can’t believe you actually want to put these adorable kittens in a blender! I guess that’s none of my business. Maybe you’re more of a dog person. Sure, kittens are curious by nature, but when they get in a kitchen full of dangerous appliances, it is up to you to save them.

This fast-paced card game has players working to save all of their own kittens before the unthinkable happens. But sometimes the only way to save your precious litter of kittens is to let those curious little cats learn the lesson of why you should never play in a Blender!

Objective: Save your kittens and send your opponents' kittens to The Blender.

On each turn, players play two cards and then draw back up to 6. Kitten cards may be played into The Blender, The Counter or The Box. All other cards are played face up in front of the player so that all players can see which cards have been played. Other cards move kitten or turn on the dreaded blender.

The game ends when all 16 of the Blend cards have been played. Saved kittens are worth 2 points each, blended kitties cost 1 point each. Highest score wins.

Gaming for 24 hours straight, to raise funds for Extra Life!

November 7th 2015 members of the Windsor Gaming Resource will be gathering at Brimstone Games to play games for 24 hours straight in support of Extra Life!

This is our third year in a row supporting Extra Life as a group (some individual members have been doing it longer). Last year we raised an amazing $4,575.70 (That's in US!) for The Children's Miracle Network of Hospitals blowing away our $2000 goal. This year we are hoping to break the $5K mark.

What is Extra Life?

Extra Life was started in 2008 by the Sarcastic Gamer Community as a tribute to one specific leukemia victim: Victoria Enmon. The group created a 24-hour long video game marathon to raise money for the hospital that treated and fought beside Tori. 100% of the funds raised went to the local Children's Miracle Network.

November 7th - Live gaming auction in support of Extra Life

It's that time of year again. Time for Extra Life, the 24 hour gaming marathon done in support of the Children's Miracle Network Hospitals.

Last year members of the Windsor Gaming Resource raised over $4000! in support of this great cause. A large portion of that money came from our 8pm live game auction. Due to that we've decided to do another this year.

The auction will be held at 8pm on the night of Extra Life, which is November 7th. It will be at Brimstone games which can be found at 3298 Walker Road in Windsor Ontario Canada.

The auction items will be a mix of new and used games and other cool geeky items. There will be hand knit dice bags from Mercantile 519, games from Z-man Games. Bezier Games, Break From Reality, Game Salute, Black Shark Enterprises, and way more.

We are still looking for more items to auction off. If you have something you would like to donate to the auction you can either bring it to the event, drop it off at Brimstone Games or contact Moe Tousignant some time before November 7th.
If you are interested in supporting us in some other way, perhaps joining us for 24 hours of gaming or making a donation to the cause, check out this post for everything we are doing for Extra Life.

The Great Canadian Board Game Blitz is back! October 18th

The first stop on The Road to Extra Life is the Great Canadian Board Game Blitz! Come out October 18th play some great games and support a great cause.

This all day, no elimination, five round board game tournament will be hosted at Brimstone Games. Sign up will happen between 10am and 11am. The tournament starts at 11am sharp and will run until 8pm at the latest.

For this years event we will have five rounds:

Round 1 - 1 hour
Round 2 - 1 hour
Round 3 - 1.5 hours
Food Break 1 hour
Round 4 - 1.5 hours
Final Round - 2 hours

Each round players will score points based on their ranking in the game. These points are weighted by the game length (so you get more points for winning a 2 hour game than a 1 hour game). At the end of the event prizes will be awarded based on total points earned.

You can find out more about The Great Canadian Board Game Blitz including the full rules and scoring system over at: http://www.gcbgb.ca/

The cost to participate in this Blitz is $10. $5 of this will be going towards Extra Life. The other $5 goes towards prizes for First, Second and Third Place in the form of Brimstone Games gift certificates. This means that the more people that enter, the better the prizes will be and the more we help out a great cause. There will also be door prizes that can be won by anyone participating. Knowing Brimstone they may through in a few extra deals as well.

This will be the sixth time we have hosted a Great Canadian Board Game Blitz here in Windsor. Each previous event has been awesome and we've seen more and more people out ever year. We've got room for 40 people so let's make 2015 a record year.

What is Extra Life? Extra Life is gaming based charity event that raises money for the Children's Miracle Network of hospitals. The main event is a 24 hour gaming marathon that will be happening on November 7th this year. Last year members of the Windsor Gaming Resource raised $4575.70 and we are hoping to top that this year. Though the marathon is set for a specific day there is nothing stopping participants from raising money year round. This Blitz is the first stop on the Road to Extra Life and half of the entry fee goes directly to Extra Life.

If you aren't able to attend the event but would still like to support the awesome gamers of Windsor Ontario, you can make a donation on our Extra Life page. Just click on the Roster button, pick a member to support and hit the "Support Me" button.

You can sign up to attend on the Windsor Blitz Facebook Page

You can find Brimstone at 3298 Walker Rd. Parking is available on the south side of the building and on the city streets around back.

Featured game: Coup and it's new expansion Reformation.

Reformation the first expansion for the great large group (shall I say party game) Coup, is here!

Coup: Reformation, an expansion for the original version of Coup: City State from La Mame Games, adds new cards to the game and rules for factions and team play that increases tension in the early stages for four or more players and (thanks to 15 additional character cards) allows Coup to be better played with up to ten players.

With Coup: Reformation, each player must declare himself either Catholic (Loyalist in the second edition) or Protestant (Resistance) and can target only members of the other faction. Conversion is possible, however, for yourself or for another player by paying a charitable donation to the Almshouse (Treasury). Like all factions, once you have eliminated or converted the other group, you just descend into in-fighting, so there's still only one winner and no second place.

Coup: Reformation adds a new fluid team dynamic to Coup as players jostle with their allegiance to take advantage or seek protection in the early stages of the game.

CG Ream CGame night featuring Magic The Gathering - Arena of the Planeswalkers

The 2nd Saturday of every month the Windsor Gaming Resource is proud to promote The CG Realm CGame night.

The CG Realm is located at 3147 Tecumseh Road East, right here in Windsor.

In addition to a growing collection of games for sale and demo games for you to try out, they also have a great gaming area with lots of tables, lots of room and great lighting.

Featured Game: Magic the Gathering - Arena of the Planeswalkers

Magic the Gathering in board game form.

This game is an update of the popular Heroscape system from Wizards of the Coat and in my opinion is an improvement on the original in almost all ways.

Great looking minis, quick gameplay, easy to learn and teach and so much faster to set up than the original. The way the cards work really brings the Magic feel home and ads a great level of tactics to the game.

You get an insane amount of stuff for the price point. Full armies for all five colours of mana including pre-painted planeswalker minis. All for a fantastically low price for what you get.

The cities in the West are not the safest place to be. In the disc-flicking game Flick 'em Up!, you can become an outlaw and rob banks, free prisoners, attack innocent bystanders... or you could become the Sheriff and try to protect the people of your city from these bandits!

Featured game: Cacao

As a follow up to our Carcassonne game night we have another tile laying game. While Carc. is an old classic Cacao is the new hotness.
Cacao is a tile-placement game that immerses players in the exotic world of the "fruit of the Gods". As the chief of your tribe, you must lead your people to prosperity through the cultivation and trade of cacao — and to do that, you'll need to put them to work in the best way possible.

In the game, each player has an individual deck of square worker tiles, with the number of workers on each side of the tile varying from tile to tile. The playing area starts with only a couple of jungle tiles in play: a cacao field and a small market; two jungle tiles are laid face up, and the remaining jungle tiles stacked as a draw pile.

On a player's turn, she places one of her worker tiles on the board adjacent to one or more jungle tiles already in play, then (if two worker tiles are next to an empty space) adds one of the jungle tiles to the playing area in this space. Her workers then get busy and deliver the results of their effort: If you placed workers next to a cacao field, you receive one or two cacao markers per worker; if they're next to a market, you can choose to sell one cacao marker per worker at the listed price; if next to a well, you receive water; if next to a temple, they stand and look good until the end of the game; and so on. She then refills her hand from her personal deck to three worker tiles.

Once all players have used all of their worker tiles, the game ends. Players score (or lose) points based on their water supply, and each temple rewards whichever players sent the most workers to it. In the end, whoever has collected the most gold wins.

This time we are featuring the first game in The Dice Tower Essentials line: Sheriff of Nottingham.

Prince John is coming to Nottingham! Players, in the role of merchants, see this as an opportunity to make quick profits by selling goods in the bustling city during the Prince's visit. However, players must first get their goods through the city gate, which is under the watch of the Sheriff of Nottingham. Should you play it safe with legal goods and make a profit, or risk it all by sneaking in illicit goods? Be mindful, though, as the Sheriff always has his eyes out for liars and tricksters and if he catches one, he very well may confiscate those goods for himself!

GM Advice - no time for introductions

Would love to credit the creator of this image, is it you?
Almost every RPG sessions I've seen, played, heard or watched has started the same way. No, not necessarily in a Tavern. Every game seems to start with character introductions.

The GM asks the players, in turn, to describe their characters. Player one starts telling everyone about how his character is an Elf, from Elfholm, who has 3 siblings that are all competing for daddy's attention. He describes this elf's hair, her eye colour. There's a description of what armour the elf is wearing, what weapons she wields.

Sometimes a player goes into in depth background details that take up a ton of time. Other times a player will say almost nothing at all.

Overall this process takes a ton of time, as each player gives their own description and/or background. In some groups this can take up most of a session depending on how much each player wants to share. What's shared often varies player to player. One player will read through their 5 pages of family history while the next player will only say: "I'm a human fighter with plate and a greatsword, I look like an average big tough dude."

I am not a fan of this method of starting the game. I personally feel that an RPG game has no time for introductions.

The Windsor Star News Cafe is located at 300 Ouellette Ave, 3rd floor. This is the cafe that is part of the new Windsor Star located where the old downtown Palace Theater was.

The Windsor Star News Cafe has great food, coffee and other yummy things. The location is also licensed and offers some awesome beer from Walkerville Brewery as well as local Wines. Street parking is free after 6pm if you can find a spot and there are two parking garages in a very short walking distance if you can't.

We play a wide variety of games at these events. You will find card, dice and board games. We've even seen some miniature gamers bring their armies out. There's no theme to the event. Our last gaming event saw games of Elysium, Win, Lose and Banana, Star Trek Next Phase Deck Builder, Dungeons & Dragons Fifth Edition, Spyfall, DC Deck Building Game, Euphoria: Build a Better Dystopia and many more.

We encourage you to bring some games out, whether an old favourite or something new you want to try out. If you don't have anything to bring, that's cool too. There's always lots of variety and people are always happy to teach you the games they have brought.
